Guide to Coding Bootcamps in London

General Assembly
July 31, 2024

Behold the UK tech sector: a formidable powerhouse valued at $1 trillion — a feat previously achieved only by the US and China. Fueled by the UK government’s proactive support for innovation, as well as tech-friendly policies like the “start-up visa” and venture capital investment totaling $7.9 billion USD, the country’s tech market continues its upward ascent.

London stands tall as the “undisputed tech and innovation capital of Europe,” echoing the words of city mayor Sadiq Khan. Following a 50% surge in UK tech vacancies from 2020-2021, software developers stand out as the most sought-after talent, representing 9% of the total demand. Despite these substantial talent shortages, London currently outranks every other city in the world in its ability to create, develop and deploy technology.

Outside of London, digital suburbs like Bournemouth and Liverpool are carving their niches. The buzzing metropolis teems with opportunities, including over 300,000 tech jobs and open positions at Google, GitLab, Epsilon, and TaskRabbit. Better still, 49% of London’s available tech roles transcend traditional big tech, catering to a wide array of interests across diverse industries, including finance, healthcare, retail, and entertainment. With investments in large language models and 5G technology, the landscape is ripe for participation in widespread business transformations.

Eager to dive in? You can join London’s tech ranks without spending four years at King’s College London earning a degree. London employers are increasingly on the lookout for fresh, job-ready skills that can be acquired through expert-led coding bootcamps in just 3 months.

Accelerate Your London Tech Career: Pick a Date and Let’s Get Started

There’s truth in numbers. With a tech talent gap facing 81% of global organisations, the time to fix broken, dated learning paths and talent pipelines is upon us. Whether you’re looking for a better career or trying to fill an open role, we don’t have four to six years to wait. Over 85 million global tech jobs could go unfilled by 2030, resulting in annual losses of $8.5 trillion USD, if something doesn’t change right now.

Tech bootcamps have been around since 2011, but they’re getting renewed attention due to their ability to upskill, reskill, and recruit a robust tech workforce in short order. By combining focused curriculum, small class size, hands-on learning, and expert mentors, learners gain fundamental knowledge and skills they can put to use on day one.

The flexible schedule and remote instruction means you can complete your web development training in London from the comfort of home. Modelling real-world scenarios provided by in-field experts and employer partnerships, you’ll work on impactful projects to build a portfolio as you learn.

Best of all, bootcamps prioritise job readiness with most grads landing a tech role within 180 days of programme completion. From resume refinement to recruiter events, you’ll have all the support you need to take the next step in your career.

From Tuition to Salary: Calculating Coding Bootcamp ROI

The cost of education is ever increasing, making some question whether a traditional university degree is worth it. Local Londoners pay tuition fees of between £1,820 to £9250 a year, while international students can expect annual bills totaling £1,820 to £61,000. With recent changes to the loan repayment programme, UK university students will be 60 years old and still making payments on their education.

Bootcamps, on the other hand, wrap up in a few months’ time and cost less than one year of university, enabling learners to get paid a decent salary and recoup ROI from their educational investments much quicker. For instance, a London software engineer makes an average salary of £59,000 — which is well above what surrounding cities are paying and £7,400 more than the national average. And like universities, bootcamps accept scholarships, instalment plans, discounts, and financial aid.

Exploring Coding Career Opportunities in London

London remains a top destination for software engineers, with salaries increasing by 8% year-over-year. “Here in London, you can start at £30,000, and from there, the sky’s the limit,” says Pedro Martin, a GA instructor and software engineer at Red Badger in London.

Back end, full stack, and front end engineers are the most sought-after roles, receiving the majority of interview requests. With 750 new roles advertised daily, the average software engineer receives 5.6 interview requests.

According to Hired’s 2023 UK State of Software Engineers report, Gaming engineers earn the highest average salary at £92,000, followed by search engineers at £89,000, and security or machine learning engineers tie at £87,000.

Consider a London coding bootcamp as your stepping stone to a job you love.

Choosing the Right London Coding Bootcamp

DO I NEED ANY PREREQUISITES TO LEARN SOFTWARE ENGINEERING?

Our London Software Engineering Bootcamp is a beginner-friendly program with no prerequisites, although many students have engaged in self-learning previously or have worked at tech startups or in tech-adjacent roles to develop basic HTML, CSS, and other skills. Whether you’re new to software engineering or looking to formalise your practice, this course helps you gain fluency in the programming languages, frameworks, and libraries that today’s employers demand — and put that knowledge to work on the path to a new career.
