CHAMPIONS OF GA, EPISODE 4: A SHIFT FROM SALES TO UX

General Assembly
August 15, 2024

Name: Jess

Course: UX Design Immersive

Year Graduated: 2022

Location: UK

Jess’s Story:

Vision precedes victory. Without a clear and compelling picture of the future, it’s impossible to muster the courage you need to face the obstacles that are sure to come your way.

Take Jess, who was working in a sales role at a small food company, longing to merge her creative spirit and passion for technology into a new career—one that spoke more deeply to who she was and what she wanted to achieve.

“I was craving a more creative and technical job,” she says. “So I started looking at what could fuse those two things into my day-to-day role.”

User experience design hit that sweet spot for Jess, combining research, strategy, and design to optimize interactions between people, products, and services. From wireframing and visual design to prototyping and usability testing, Jess could transform her talents and ambitions into customer satisfaction and business performance.

Then came the question—how to make the leap from her current sales role? General Assembly’s UX Design Bootcamp was the answer.

“I chose General Assembly because I thought it could give me the best kickstart into the new career,” she says.

And she was right. Having landed a UX role post bootcamp, she now has the opportunity to do what she loves—and pour her all into her work. “I actively want to work longer hours,” she says, “because I get real satisfaction out of solving the problems in my day-to-day role, and the variety it creates.”

An added bonus? Her teammates are an inspiring part of this newly manifested reality—providing a supportive and challenging community that brings out her best. “I enjoy the people I work with,” she says. “And I work with some really talented people.”

Jess had success in her sights—and together we made it real. “I wouldn’t be in the career where I am today without General Assembly,” says Jess. “I would still be in my sales role, probably really not enjoying my nine-to-five.”

Bottom line: The vision you have for your career is the starting place for all achievement. From there, it’s a matter of taking steps—one by one—to crystallize your ambition. And when you’re ready? You know where to find us.
