The ABCs of the Metaverse: What It Is and Why It Matters

General Assembly
August 5, 2023

Technology is advancing at a rapid pace. One topic that’s been taking over our newsfeeds is The Metaverse.

If you’re looking to get into tech you’ll definitely want to know what this is. Keep reading to uncover the impact this emerging technology will have on tech jobs.

What Is the Metaverse?

The Metaverse can perhaps best be described as the collision of our physical world with the digital world. Jump into your X1 haptic bodysuit and hop onto your omnidirectional treadmill with quadraphonic pressure sensitive underlays and you’re good to go (okay—that’s a reference to Ready Player One), but what was once only fiction is quickly becoming reality.

The metaverse is an emerging technology that creates environments where the boundaries between the physical and digital worlds blur, allowing seamless transitions between what is real and what is virtual.

This environment has three essential components: the immersive experience, the virtual space where these experiences occur, and the underlying economy that drives engagement and monetization. The Metaverse has the potential to revolutionize our lives within the next decade, especially as younger generations embrace a digital-first mindset.

Avatars

In the Metaverse (like in the movies), individuals are not represented by their physical selves but by digital versions called avatars. Avatars provide opportunities for role-playing and exploring different scenarios, which can actually contribute to improved mental health and increased confidence. Avatars offer a means of escape from real-world obligations and allow individuals to express their creativity.

There is a growing trend where people are able to integrate their real-life personas into their avatars. Tools are being developed so you’ll be able to create your avatar’s look using your real-life photos. Facebook Meta is actively promoting this feature, possibly to ensure professional settings within the Metaverse maintain a sense of realism.

Brands

When it comes to brands in the Metaverse, they’re still in the early stages of testing and learning how to engage. Brands will need to focus on adding value to the Metaverse community rather than solely pushing their products or corporate messaging. Engaging with communities and building connections will be critical for brands that want to succeed in this new environment.

That’s not to say that transitioning to Web3 will be easy. Many companies still don’t understand how they can benefit from entering the Metaverse. As more and more customers join, brands will need to remain agile and quickly adapt to stay present with their communities in the Metaverse. Building pilot projects and proof of concepts will help brands visualize the possibilities and gain confidence as they enter the Metaverse.

For example, a live concert by Mohan Hamake attracted millions of online viewers, demonstrating the massive reach and audience engagement that the Metaverse can offer. This highlights the potential for entertainment and the power of immersive experiences that other companies in the Metaverse can leverage.

Communities

While the rise of the Metaverse has created new opportunities and challenges for brands and individuals alike, the core of this new frontier is around building communities.

Effective Web3 communities will be vital for the Metaverse’s success, as communities create connections, empower collaboration, and drive engagement.

In the Metaverse, communities thrive when they are genuine, add value, and involve the community in decision-making processes. Understanding why people do the things they do will help companies target their audiences and find like-minded people who will want to spend time together in the Metaverse. Leveraging generative AI can also enhance creativity and provide personalized group experiences. You know how they use the Holodeck for training exercises in Star Trek? That’s the type of thing generative AI may be able to do one day.

Imagine the Capabilities

Imagine signing into the Metaverse, and asking it to “create a watercolor world that looks like Monet’s garden” so you can read in it. Or you can invite your grandparents who live on the other side of the country out to a movie, except you meet each other in a virtual theater connected to your Netflix accounts. You won’t be able to share popcorn, but other than that they’ll be right next to you. Or perhaps before buying a product, you interact with it in the Metaverse. Imagine trying on clothes, going for a test drive, or getting to touch and feel nearly anything for sale online before you actually buy it. As you can see, the entry point into the Metaverse caters to both enterprise and consumer needs.

But, in order for the Metaverse to evolve, education will need to play a central role. Not everyone is as excited about the Metaverse as us techies. It’ll be the responsibility of industry commentators, bloggers, and experts to share their knowledge to attract a wider audience and make the Metaverse less intimidating.

Vitaliy identifies two potential pathways for building community: content creation and wider accessibility. Creating compelling content that appeals to a broad audience can drive adoption, even with existing technology limitations. Additionally, the launch of mixed reality glasses, like those rumored from Apple, holds promise for enhancing the Metaverse experience. Mixed reality glasses can overlay digital layers onto real environments, providing a seamless integration of virtual and physical worlds (augmented reality).

The Metaverse’s Impact on Tech

The Metaverse won’t only impact the way we live, but also the way we work—especially for those of us working in tech. To bring the Metaverse to life, experts in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies will be in high demand. These professionals will be responsible for developing and designing virtual worlds that users can explore and interact with. They will build the backbone of the captivating experiences users in the Metaverse engage with.

Additionally, the Metaverse’s seamless functioning will rely heavily on a robust internet infrastructure. Professionals who can optimize network capabilities will play a vital role ensuring smooth interactions and real-time data transfer within the Metaverse. The integration of blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies within the Metaverse opens up exciting possibilities. Professionals skilled in blockchain development, smart contract programming, and digital asset management will be sought after. They will contribute to creating secure and decentralized systems that facilitate seamless transactions and protect users’ digital assets within the Metaverse, adding even more diversity to the list of things software engineers do

The Metaverse will unleash the creative potential of content creators, digital artists, and virtual world builders

These creative professionals will develop visually appealing content such as 3D models, animations, and virtual environments. By showcasing their user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) talents within the Metaverse, they will contribute to its vibrancy and captivation, making it an enticing space for users.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) will be instrumental in making the Metaverse intelligent and responsive.

AI/ML specialists will use helpful tools like ChatGPT to develop algorithms that power virtual agents, provide personalized recommendations, and deliver realistic simulations within the Metaverse. These experts will shape the interactions and experiences users have, creating lifelike virtual environments.

Community managers and moderators will also have a significant role to play.

These individuals will drive engagement, organize events, and simply make sure users have a good experience. They’ll contribute to the growth of virtual societies by giving people a strong sense of belonging.

As the Metaverse expands, ensuring user security and privacy will be incredibly important. Security analysts, privacy experts, and ethical hackers will be needed to protect users against cyber threats. These professionals will safeguard users’ personal information and digital identities within the Metaverse in the hopes of building trust and confidence among users.

We don’t know everything the Metaverse has in store for us, but it certainly seems that—just like your future—it can be whatever you make it.
